BBC Asian Network Live
We helped the BBC bring Asian Network Live to Birmingham.
In 2018 the BBC held Asian Network Live outside of London for the first time, a live concert featuring UK and international artists championed by the station. The event was triple-cast live across the BBC’s youth radio stations — Asian Network, Radio 1 and 1Xtra, along with a live video stream on BBC iPlayer.
We were responsible for the branding and promotional campaign across print and online in 2018 and again in 2019. Our design remit included everything from Asian Network’s social content and website skins, local poster and billboard sites as well as supporting materials for outreach workshop events that brought BBC DJs together with local young artists and talent.
The aim was to appeal to a younger audience and better reflect the increasingly R&B and Hip Hop focused nature of the artists being championed alongside more traditional Asian music.
We created a visual aesthetic was inspired by street-art and hand-painted murals on wood panels, metal shutters and Tuk-tuks. We chose a bright Asian-influenced colour palette and complemented it with a suite of patterns based on various landmarks around the city, such as the Bull Ring and the Library of Birmingham.
Along with the campaign, we also created a suite of design assets that were used across broadcast graphics, stage backdrops and even to dress the backstage green room.
