In 2019 BBC Radio 6 Music took its annual festival to Liverpool to showcase great music and celebrate the city and its unique culture.
The River Mersey ran through all of our research, from the people who originally arrived at the port and made their home in Liverpool, to the records that were brought in with the sailors from America. The Mersey is less a river and more the lifeblood of the city. We commissioned @peachcreation @theBluecoat to create a linocut of our original illustration of the Mersey and key landmarks to reflect the city’s industrial past, character and energy.
We developed a colour palette inspired by the festival venues and introduced expressive, illustrated colour waves to the linocut, weaving in and out of the background. We used a bold condensed font for the festival logotype to ensure impact and clarity at any size. We introduced a split layer, suggesting a shifting of perception and an alternative view, allowing the 6 Music identity to overlap enhances the experimental feel and unites the elements in one balanced marque.
"The branding looked brilliant over the weekend - such strong standout and the waves poster looks great on the social feeds. Lovely stuff." Vikki Stephenson, BBC Creative
